You cant make big generalizations.

Each state enacts their own laws. They all define it differently. But you CAN do the research and within the law it specifies exactly what type of animal, what the charge will be and any exceptions.

Some states define animal differently. Some make exceptions or rules for livestock. some exempt pests from the law. Some set a maximum penalty. In some states its a misdemeanor, some a felony. some states specify human companion pets as the only recipient of protection. if that frog is on the endangered species list, you are in a world of hurt.

so do the research for your specific ideas.

I would be prepared for some upsetting things, though--I hope that you are a lot tougher than I am. People do some really rotten things to animals. Most cruelty is in the form of neglect and abandonment, or simply leaving a dog alone in a backyard on a chain, feeding him scraps once a day but otherwise never touching him. That alone makes me very sad, but there are terrible people out there that make a game out of hurting little animals. That breaks my heart, and it makes me want to give the human a huge taste of his own medicine, but in our laws, kicking a human is a far more serious crime than kicking a defenseless dog or cat--unfortunately.

But it's great that you want to start. You know, the no kill shelter where I adopted my first dog (I have 3--some people tell me that I have 3 too many) was a wonderful place. It's called Friends Of Homeless Animals and it's in Louden Co, VA. What made this place unique was that the animals were saved, but not warehoused. There were tons and tons of volunteers that showed up all throughout the week to take the dogs for walks and got them plenty of excercise and socialized them with people and other dogs--getting them ready to be pets. I think that would be that kind of job would be really fun for you to start with. See if there is a shelter like that where you live (there should be more of them!)

All of these animals are considered pests or rodents, so killing them shouldn't be a crime.

However, torturing a mouse or frog might be considered cruelty since these animals are sometimes kept as pets, especially since mice have shown to be somewhat intelligent in lab tests.

I would strongly recommend that you refrain from torturing any kind of animal, not just for legality's sake, but for your own personal safety. Most people have a strong hatred for those who torture animals and might try to hurt someone if they're caught doing it.

Hope this helps!

Go back and report it to the employs! That's the only way you can help. Employs will look at it. I get people coming up all the time telling me about our animals. Its not that hard. Its not probably even cruelty if they haven't seen it yet. If they ignore it then it is, but if they don't even realize it is hurt how is it abuse? As the other person said we don't have time to watch the cages all the time and some animals don't get along.

If they don't do anything you should talk to the manager or store manager about it. Call the hotline 800-something if nothing is done at the store.

Where I live Petco is worse. Cages never cleaned, dead/dying animals on the sales floor, etc... I don't know what ALSIP is.

You do know that some rats have red eyes right?

Torturing anything is cruel. But if you have to kill frogs because there are too many of them on your property then I guess that would be okay.

We are living in a time when the mentality surrounding animals is changing. Slowly we are moving forward, with every new piece of legislation outlawing animal cruelty in its many forms. We are heading in the right direction- there is no turning back!!!

Please call and talk to the manager, and fill out this form.

Petsmart as a company is very concerned about the well being of their animals and contacting corporate should get you some good results.

Next time you see a problem, please alert an associate. Sometimes the injuries are recent as all animals do not get along (especially in my store since we are an all male small animal store.) Of course we separate and vet as quickly as possible, but of course there is no one watching the habitats 24/7. There also should be an 800 number posted somewhere on the small animal habitat on an orange sign that reads "WE CARE WHAT YOU THINK"

I hate that some Petsmarts do not treat their animals well. I am pet care Lead at a Petsmart and I make sure all of our animals are treated well and socialized as much as possible while they are at my store.

Volunteer at your local animal shelter and ask them for local groups. I agree with above though, DON'T join PETA. They are a terrible group. They talk about animal rights, but they are only about their rights and making money for themselves. Try the SPCA or other local group.

Congratulations on wanting to help abused animals.

I think mammals have different laws.

But that makes me wonder why people are allowed to feed mice to their pet snakes.

Your question doesn't make sense. What exactly are you asking?

I don't know where you all live, but the petcos I have been are run down, dirty, and the quality of life for the animals doesn't compare to the care that our petsmarts offer.

The petcos we go to don't take care of their rats and mice because they go for feeders.

hi ,

Companies need your opinion, and they are realy to pay for that.So all you have to do is to star at home and to complete online paid surveys .

Believe me online paid surveys are the easiest way to make some extra money.

You can start today(not a joke) and to sign 100% free .

I hope that helps

Because they get donations to 'help the animals' by people who don't realize that PeTA doesn't even own a animal shelter and that they put down more animals than they save.
As in 2009
2366 animals were brought in
31 were transferred out
8 were adopted out
and the remaining 2,301 were destroyed.

With the HSUS and PETA combined annual budgets of over $124 million for political and lobbying efforts to take away our rights to own animals. And that figure does not include the many splinter organizations that have been formed from these two major organizations. We are in an uphill battle now, and it will be the fight of our lives to keep our rights to own pets.

They are going at it from many different angles. One way is to get Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) passed. The banning of Pit-Bulls all over the country is a good example. That has caught on like wildfires. The animal rights groups have said if they can just get one breed banned, then it will be easy to add others to it at a later date, until eventually all breeds are banned. Another way that they are going about it is to have a mandatory spay and neuter law in place.

Add: Oh yeah, and they're non profit.

what will change= fewer, but more aggressive animals. Plus the more something is done, the more accepted it is, so more people will think its okay to do it. But then again with the laws and police against it I don't think it will ever get very big. If there are people who continue to be against it, I don't think it ever will truly be accepted. And lets face it, animals are adorable. Especially baby animals like kittens and puppies. Humans won't ever really turn against animals and it will never really become that accepted. It will be continued to be spread by the heartless, but as long as there are people with hearts to protect them, they won't get very far. good vs evil, the good will always win, ( or the world will far apart.)

what has changed: more people to protect the animals. Now a days there are laws against it. You can report it, and police will investigate it. Theres even a tv show on Animal Planet (or there used to be..) where animal police investigate animal cruelty cases.

ASPCA its the best one.
PETA is no longer a repectable anti animal abuse group. They support the eradication of certain dog breeds. They blow things up. and generally don't do much good for the animals.
