Have a volunteer sign up page available and have them donate things like food, toys, leashes, and other supplies?
You could do a drawing for a resturant gift card, and see if the resturant would sponser you and donate it. You could give out tickets for the drawing for each item donated.

The cute bandannas are a fantastic thought! While @ our shelter recently, I did notice some with bandannas on. Towels or small blankets for the animals to lie on would be nice. Most of the time they are insincere on the bare concrete.
Also people could donate $ for the animals to be showcased with their picture in the local newsaper or on the local news. Our shelter does that & it really helps get people to adopt them. Also concentrate on the older and/or not as striking and “cute” dogs because they may have a harder time finding a home.
Our shelter has some really cute t-shirts (for humans) for sale that promote spaying & neutering.

Some local restaurants may donate a dinner for two as a raffle item.Consider some of the local merchants that may offer gift certificates for the effort. Some may even match the money made from car wash.
Call the shelter & question what they specifically need.It may be bleach, dog food etc.
Local radio stations usually will advertise for free so their viewers can respond.
The shelter may also wish to have an adoption day where you are having the car wash with permission of the landowners.
One of our local markets allowed a huge drum to be placed inside the store for people to donate animal food for the shelter.
Just a few thoughts for you…

In addition to a carwash — do a donation drive.
You can do this in 2 ways:
Go around to local businesses and question if they will help sponsor you and let you use coupons for their business.
Advertise that anyone who brings something to donate (food, blankets toys etc) for the shelter gets a coupon book.
OR
You can hold a pancake breakfast or the likes (spaghetti dinner, etc) and question for donations/volunteers to help hold the breakfast.
Admission is dog beds, food, monetary donations—anything of the sort.

If you want people to adopt ..
then have it check out by ur teacher and see if they bring 2 canned items of food or a bag of food.. then they get ?($5.00) off of the adoption fee..
Question them to donate food/water to the hurricane victims and another $5,00 off.. this is for the animal shelter down close to the Gulf
excellent luck
